Web Designers Needed. Relocate to Zimbabwe.
I feel almost apprehensive about posting this one. I mean, I’m making fun of a whole government here. I wonder, if they get wind of this will they send hit men to Severna Park? You’ll all know if I stop posting and you hear no more tweets. I doubt it. They obviously don’t take their web presence seriously.
It appears that times are tough in Zimbabwe. Web design, while not a pre-requisite for membership in IGO’s, should probably have a higher priority than at least a few other things, like, say churning out monetary notes. As maybe three of you know, Zimbabwe’s annual inflation rate is over 2 million per-cent. Yeah, it looks like a typo, but it isn’t.
So what’s wrong with the site? Well, look at it. It uses all that web technology has to offer, if today is September 3rd, 1995. It uses frames and tables. That’s just awesome, isn’t it? I’m going to chalk up the horribly slow load times to the fact that the server is all the way across the pond and most likely hooked to a phone line in some kid’s mom’s basement (do they have basements in Zimbabwe?). I think the biggest image is about 60KB, but I waited about 20 minutes for the whole page to load (not to mention the sub pages).
I absolutely love the tourism page. Blue with lots of pixels and little floating bits. I love pixels. Anti-aliasing is way overrated anyway. That page will be loading until I write the next review, so…
I really wish I could spend more time learning about the Zimbabwe government, but they don’t make that kind of time. Maybe I’ll go to the CIA fact book to fill in the gaps. Too bad it’s all gaps. As it turns out, though, there is a very favorable exchange rate if you’re a semi-capable designer looking to get some international experience. As of this writing, the USD / ZWD exchange rate is 1:1510. That means that if you got paid $663 US you’d be a Zimbabwean millionaire with a bit to spare. Pretty sweet if you ask me.

my god thats the funniest shit … i just went to the site and it suffered a network timeout due to a lack of response from said server probably sitting in an unused farm in a basement lol …
i was dying to run a html validation test on the site just to see how many errors would pop up as they no doubt would when you base the site design on table coding ugggh … sooo 1997!! hell with a site design that bad I’d develop one for them FOC however im not that inclined to have Mr Mugabe as a boss haha
thanks for the laugh haha thats priceless!

I had thoughts of doing the same, but I had second thoughts based on the likelihood that the phone lines are the same as the Internet lines.
